What is an Iceberg Chart?

An iceberg chart is a unique visual format for organizing knowledge by obscurity. Like the physical iceberg it's named after, only a small portion sits above the water, the well-known, mainstream facts. Below the surface lies a far larger world of increasingly niche, obscure, and specialized knowledge.

Unlike tier lists, which rank things by personal preference, iceberg charts function as a taxonomy of obscurity. The top layers contain information you'd find on Wikipedia or in mainstream media. As you descend, you encounter community theories, lost media, forgotten history, and deep-dive research found only in archived forums or niche documentaries.

Topics span everything from video games and music to history, science, internet culture, mythology, and beyond. If a subject has layers worth exploring, it can become an iceberg.

Tier 2Enthusiast knowledge
Tier 3Niche community facts
Tier 4Deep-dive research
Tier 5Obscure & lost media
Tier 6The absolute abyss

Our Story

Iceberg Threads was created by Lanslet out of a genuine love for iceberg chart culture and a frustration with the lack of a dedicated, modern home for it.

Iceberg charts first spread across YouTube and Reddit as static image files shared in forum threads, usually with no context and no way to explore the items beyond manual Google searches. The format was brilliant, but the infrastructure around it was nearly non-existent. Creators had no dedicated tools, no collaborative features, and no community organized around the format itself.

Inspired by the foundational work at icebergcharts.com, Iceberg Threads was built to give the format the home it deserved: a purpose-built creation tool, a fully searchable archive, and a real community where creators and explorers could connect.

Since launching, the platform has grown to over 2,000 charts and 2,000 active users across more than 10 languages, covering topics from FNAF lore and forgotten video games to world history, urban legends, mathematical sequences, and everything in between.
